Repainting a working office, shop or restaurant is a scheduling problem as much as a painting one. Here is how it gets done around you.

For most businesses the paint job is not the expensive part — the closed doors are. A commercial repaint has to be planned around trading hours, staff and customers from the very start.

Phasing beats shutting down

Very few commercial interiors need to be painted all at once. Splitting the space into zones lets one area be sectioned off and finished while the rest of the building carries on working normally.

In an office that might mean one department at a time. In retail it might mean one section of the floor. In a restaurant it usually means the dining room overnight and the back of house during closed hours.

Working outside trading hours

Evening, overnight and weekend work removes the conflict entirely for a lot of businesses. It costs a little more in labour and it is almost always cheaper than lost trading days.

It needs planning around access, alarms, keys and security, which is worth sorting out before the first day rather than at eight o'clock on the night.

Low-odour products matter

Modern low-VOC commercial coatings have very little smell and cure quickly, which is what makes it possible for staff and customers to be in the building while work continues nearby.

Ventilation still gets planned in — fans and open access where the layout allows — so a space painted overnight is genuinely ready for business the next morning.

Safety and presentation while you trade

If customers are in the building, the job site has to look controlled: clean barriers, clear signage, walkways kept unobstructed, and no equipment left where someone can trip over it.

A tidy, well-signposted work area reads as professional. A tangle of drop cloths and ladders across a shop floor costs you customers while you are paying to improve the space.
